Work Life Balance Isn't My Goal
Here is a snippet from one of my weekly encouragement letters…
I’ve come to a decision: I don’t want to achieve work life balance. I know, you wondered what I meant by that, since I’m all about productivity and doing life well... yet here’s what I’ve come to realise, attempting to “balance” work and life isn’t my goal. Because I actually want to enjoy work, and have it part of my life.
Instead of work-life balance... I’m aiming to achieve a meaningful schedule.
We create space for things that matter. Show me your weekly schedule and I will be able to show you what matters to you, or what you see as a priority. I was challenged by a friend to change my phrase “I don’t have time” to “that’s not a priority.” This simple change is what made me realise I don’t want work life balance, I want more of what brings me joy and brings others joy around me.
So yes my schedule will consistent of work and life... yet it’s not a perfect balance and I’m okay with that. One season, work may be a priority and I choose to let that take up more of my time... and another season I may not want to work as much.
So, let me ask you, what matters to you?
Don’t just say “I want a work life balance” because that’s what most people in the industry are striving for... rather what are the things you are choosing to have in your schedule.
